In his several roles, as an artist and as a visionary helping to inaugurate a new and brilliant era, he made an impact that few might equal, an impact that even now has yet to be fully understood. He undertook to perform this service cheerfully and altruistically, and, as his work makes clear, he achieved that with great intelligence, style, heart and panache.
